We are in the middle of a climate crisis, over-consumption, unethical manufacturing practices, and worldwide shipping has led to deforestation, destruction of natural habitats, and significant greenhouse gas emissions.

As consumers, we need to become more conscious of “how”, “what” and “where” we purchase.

While this is a massive topic and there are several things to consider within each industry I will speak specifically about the furniture industry and what to consider when purchasing.

Locally Sourced.

As with food, local is always better! Local provides shorter supply chains reducing the emissions caused by transportation and shipping. Purchasing locally also helps support local jobs and economies.

Furthermore, when furniture is shipped across the world packaging creates a problem. Often the piece is wrapped in plastic and styrofoam, these packaging materials are immediately disposed of and enter our waste cycle.

Toxic fumes.

Some finishes, adhesives, and treatments contain harmful chemicals. Those can linger long after the furniture leaves the production area and continues to “off-gas” in homes. Off-gassing causes both health and environmental risks.

Furniture should be made with materials that don't release formaldehyde or other hazardous chemicals during the manufacturing process. Materials should be either, non-toxic low VOC or water-based and should avoid common glues, finishes, and foams with high VOC content.

The benefits of real wood.

Real is always better.

The “fast furniture” industry has been solely focused on creating as much furniture as possible at the lowest cost, creating disposable furniture, and filling our landfills. Additionally, much of this furniture is manufactured with toxic materials, such as adhesives, glues, and plastics that “off-gas” in your home or business. When purchasing this furniture it's important to consider the materials, ethical practices, and intention of the piece.

Real wood acts as a storage bank for carbon. However, when left to decay or added to a landfill the stored carbon is released. Wood is kept out of our waste cycle and banks carbon when it is used to create lasting pieces such as solid wood furniture. Often a tree will be grown in place of the fell tree and further contribute to carbon storage.

What we do

At Philadelphia Table Company we're fully aware that what we do directly impacts the planet. That's why we use as much locally sourced hardwood as possible. We believe in creating products that are both ethically sourced and manufactured. We innovate, research, and handcraft our products with a focus on environmental impacts, long-term durability, and safety for our clients.

While packaging is a necessary evil, at PTC we only use single-use plastic packaging when absolutely necessary. Additionally, much of the cellophane we use is recyclable or comes from recycled plastics.

Furthermore, all of us at PTC are very passionate about toxic-free homes and businesses. We use all-natural, non-toxic, and eco-friendly finishes for the majority of our furniture. Two of our most common finishes are plant-based and plant derived, Odies Oil and Osmo.

What we believe.

We understand that we are not perfect and simply by running a business we will have an impact on our environment. We believe that the above is the bare minimum for creating positive environmental change. In order for us to make a real difference, we need to go above and beyond. As a result, we are members of 1% for the planet and contribute 1% of our gross receipts to environmental nonprofits like One Tree Planted.

We all buy stuff, but we need to start purchasing with intention. Before clicking the buy button consider how your purchase will have downstream effects on our environment. Explore other options that may be a tad more expensive but have a better environmental impact. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
