About Live Edge Tables
A unique, one of a kind, live-edge table can bring a major wow factor to any room or home. The tables come in many different shapes and sizes and it is helpful to know what the various options are. A thinner top can create a more luxurious, high end feel, and a thicker top can create a more rustic feel. Paired with the right base, a live-edge table can fit into any home aesthetic. Outlined below are the most common types of tops. All of the tables pictured below are in Walnut. However, we work with a variety of wood species to offer our clients a variety of shades, shapes, and textures, and we will advise you on what we recommend for your piece.
Live-edge slabs are sold at market value and prices vary based upon size, color, character, and species. As a result, each live-edge table will be uniquely priced and often cost between $3200 - $18,000 (base included).
Multi-piece
A multi piece live-edge table is a table where the table surface is made using mulitiple boards with smaller live edge pieces on the edges. We make these by cutting a narrower live edge slab down the middle length wise and jointing it with dimensional lumber to fill out the width. These tables have multiple seams, often making the seams less noticeable than a single seamed book-matched table. Since we are using multiple boards we are able to customize width and size. These tables often create a more refined look.
Pros:
Have more control of dimension
Affordably priced
Cons:
A bit less character
Book Match
A book-matched live-edge table is when a table is constructed using two slabs often sistered slices to create a mirrored effect along one middle seam. It is created using two slabs and removing one live edge from each piece to create a square “glue” seam running the length of the table.
Pros:
Wider variety in table width
Attractive mirrored look
Cons:
Expensive
Single seam can be more noticeable/pronounced
Single Slab
A single slab live-edge table is a table where the entire table surface is made from one slab. These tables allow you to see the complete picture of the wood grain. However, the table dimensions are limited to the size of the wood slab. Often, clients need to compromise on the dimensions of their table. Slabs at standard table sizes are also hard to find and can sometimes get very pricey.
Pros:
See Full spectrum of graining
Unique defined character
Cons:
Pricey
May need to compromise size
